Most Chinese documents that reach us are not the document a UK reader expects. Civil facts in mainland China are commonly proved by a notarial certificate issued by a notary office – a bound booklet restating the fact, often with an English version bound in – rather than by a birth or marriage certificate of the kind the UK issues.
We translate all of it: the notarial certificate, the underlying record, the household register, the degree and the graduation certificate that goes with it. WHAT THE HOME OFFICE actually asks for
Where documents provided are not in English or Welsh, you must provide a full dated and signed translation in English that can be verified. This must be dated and include the full name and signature of the translator or an authorised official of the translation company and their contact details.

WHY EKO 4 for Chinese
Anyone can say they translate Chinese. These are the three things that actually decide whether a Chinese file is accepted.
Simplified or traditional – they are not interchangeable
The mainland and Singapore use simplified characters; Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau use traditional. They differ in the characters themselves and in a good deal of official vocabulary, and a document handled by a linguist trained on the wrong one reads as foreign to the office receiving it. We assign on where the document was issued, not on the word “Chinese”.
The notarial certificate is the document
There is often no standalone birth or marriage certificate to send. The notary office issues a notarial certificate restating the fact, and that booklet is what the receiving body reads. Many come with an English version already bound in – which is not the same as a certified translation by a named translator, and UK bodies routinely ask for one anyway. We translate the whole booklet, English pages included, so nothing is missing from the certified version.
Surname first, and the passport spelling wins
Chinese names put the family name first, and the pinyin on your passport may not match the order or the spacing a UK form expects. We reproduce the characters, give the pinyin as your passport gives it, and keep it identical across every document in the file – because a caseworker comparing two spellings sees two people.

These are three different things and ordering the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake in the process. Which you need is decided entirely by who is receiving the document, and it is the first thing we check when you ask for a quote.

Will a UK university or UK ENIC accept your translation?
Yes. The degree certificate, the graduation certificate and the transcript are translated together, because an assessment needs all three, and each is issued dated on company letterhead with the translator named and signed. Grades are translated exactly as awarded and never mapped to a UK classification – comparability is UK ENIC’s judgement, not a translator’s.
My notarial certificate already has an English version in it.
That is common and it is usually not enough. The bound English text is not a translation certified by a named translator with verifiable contact details, which is what UK guidance asks for. We translate the complete booklet, including the English pages, so the certified version matches the original page for page.
Do you translate traditional Chinese from Hong Kong or Taiwan?
Yes, and by linguists who work with those systems rather than mainland ones. Tell us where the document was issued when you send it.
Can you translate a hukou household register?
Yes, in full – every person listed, every entry and every stamp. Relationship evidence is usually exactly why it was asked for, so a partial translation defeats the purpose.
Do you handle company and contract documents?
Yes: business licences, articles, audited accounts, tender documents and contracts, by linguists who work in that subject. Regular volumes run through a corporate account rather than order by order.
Do you need my original document?
No. A clear scan or photograph is enough for the whole job including certification, and a wet-stamped hard copy is posted to your address when you need one.
