THREE THINGS that decide whether legal translation is any good
A witness statement stays in the witness’s own language
The Civil Procedure Rules expect a statement to be in the witness’s own words and own language, with a translation filed alongside it – not drafted in English and signed by somebody who cannot read it. Getting that the wrong way round is the most common procedural problem we are asked to fix after the fact. Tell us which way the statement is going and we prepare it in the form the court expects.
Concepts without an equivalent are glossed, never swapped
Civil-law systems contain instruments that common law simply does not have, and the nearest English word is often a false friend that means something materially different. Those terms are rendered and then explained in a translator’s note, so the reader knows what the source actually says. Substituting a familiar English term because it looks close is how a translated contract acquires an obligation nobody agreed to.

Will a UK court accept your translation?
Yes. It is issued dated, on company letterhead, with the translator named and signed and our contact details on it, and where the court or the other side requires more we can have the declaration sworn before a solicitor acting as Commissioner for Oaths or witnessed by a notary. Tell us what has been asked for.
Can you work to a hearing date?
That is the normal case rather than the exception. Tell us the date when you send the papers and you will get an honest answer before you commit – including when a deadline is not achievable, which is more useful to you than finding out the evening before.
How do you handle a large disclosure exercise?
As one project against one glossary, with a standing team rather than whoever is free, running at up to 11,000 words a day. Firms that do this regularly usually move onto a corporate account, which fixes the terms once and keeps the same linguists on the file.
Is our material kept confidential?
Yes, under UK GDPR, on our own platform rather than emailed around a network of freelancers, and seen only by the linguists assigned to the matter. We will sign your NDA, and a data processing agreement if your compliance team wants one.
Do you translate into other languages as well as into English?
Both directions, across 76 languages. Tell us the pair and the jurisdiction the document is going to, because the second one changes the terminology as much as the first.
What if a term genuinely has no English equivalent?
It is rendered as closely as the language allows and then explained in a translator’s note. What we will not do is quietly substitute an English term that means something else, however natural it reads.
