ACADEMIC TRANSLATION by people who work in the field

Academic translation splits between two readers. One is an admissions office or a credential assessor deciding what a qualification is worth, and what they need is a complete, certified, unembellished record. The other is a journal, a supervisor or a conference, and what they need is work that reads as though it had been written in the language.

Both are handled here, by linguists who work in the subject rather than whoever is free. Certified with a signed declaration of accuracy on company letterhead, dated, with our wet stamp where one is needed.

WHAT WE TRANSLATE in academic work

  • Academic transcripts and mark sheets
  • Diplomas and degree certificates
  • School leaving and secondary certificates
  • Diploma supplements and module descriptions
  • Research papers and journal articles
  • Theses and dissertations
  • Abstracts and conference material
  • Grant and funding applications
  • Reference and recommendation letters
  • Course syllabuses and programme handbooks
  • Ethics and research documentation
  • Peer-review correspondence

Not on the list? Send it anyway – the analysis is free and we will tell you honestly whether it is work we should be doing. The full service is on professional translation.

THREE THINGS that decide whether academic translation is any good

Grades are translated, never mapped

A mark of 4 in one system and a 2:1 in ours are not the same statement, and deciding whether they are comparable is UK ENIC’s judgement and an admissions office’s, not a translator’s. Grades are reproduced exactly as awarded, with the scale reproduced alongside them. A translation that helpfully converts them has made a decision it had no authority to make.

The transcript without its grading scale is half a document

The key that explains the marks is usually printed on the back of the transcript or on a separate sheet, and it is routinely left out when people scan the front only. No assessment can be made without it. Send both sides of everything, and if the scale is missing we will tell you before we start rather than after.

In a paper, the references stay findable

A bibliography exists so a reader can locate the sources. Translating the titles in a reference list makes them unsearchable and makes the paper look careless to a reviewer. References are left in the language they were published in, with the apparatus around them – headings, abstracts, captions, figure text – localised properly.

ACADEMIC TRANSLATION questions, answered

Will a UK university accept your translation?

Yes, and we guarantee acceptance. Transcripts and certificates are translated in full, including the grading scale and every stamp, and issued dated on company letterhead with the translator named and signed and our contact details on it.

Do you convert my grades to a UK classification?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Grades are reproduced exactly as awarded with the scale alongside. Comparability is decided by UK ENIC or by the institution, on the evidence a faithful translation gives them.

I only have the certificate, not the transcript.

Then it is worth obtaining the transcript before you order. The certificate says you passed; the transcript says what you studied and what you scored, and that is what is actually assessed. We will translate whatever you have, but we would rather tell you first.

Can you translate a paper for submission to a journal?

Yes, by a linguist who works in the subject, with a second native-speaking linguist reading the whole thing. References stay in their published language so they remain findable; headings, abstract, captions and figure text are localised.

Can you handle a whole thesis?

Yes, as one project against one glossary so terminology stays fixed across every chapter, at up to 11,000 words a day across a team. Tell us the submission date when you send it.

Do you need my original documents?

No. Clear scans of both sides are enough for the entire job including certification, and a wet-stamped hard copy is posted to your address when you need one.

Send us the file

You will have an itemised written quote, a delivery date and a straight answer on what the receiving body actually needs – free, with no obligation, and handled confidentially under UK GDPR. We will sign your NDA first if you would rather.

ACADEMIC TRANSLATION wherever your offices are

The whole service runs digitally, so where you are makes no difference to the work, the timing or the price. Send files, approve the quote, and the finished work comes back by email – with a wet-stamped hard copy posted to your address when one is needed.
