Translation
Most of the time a marriage certificate is translated because someone has to be satisfied that a marriage is genuine and legally recognised – a visa caseworker, a court, a register office or a pension provider. That is a higher bar than simply rendering the words.
So the whole document is translated: the entries, the officiant, the witnesses, the seals and registration stamps, and any later annotations such as a divorce or an annulment recorded on the certificate itself.
WHAT THE HOME OFFICE asks for
This is the requirement in the Home Office’s own words, and it is the standard every certified translation we issue is built to meet:
Where documents provided are not in English or Welsh, you must provide a full dated and signed translation in English that can be verified. This must be dated and include the full name and signature of the translator or an authorised official of the translation company and their contact details.

A spouse or partner visa
The certificate is the core evidence of the relationship, and the Home Office needs it in English in a form it can independently verify.
Changing your name
HM Passport Office, the DVLA, banks and employers all accept a certified translation of a foreign marriage certificate as evidence of a name change.
Divorce or family proceedings
HM Courts & Tribunals Service requires a certified English translation of a foreign marriage certificate filed in support of proceedings.
Pensions, insurance and probate
Survivor benefits, life policies and inheritance claims all turn on proving the marriage, often years after it took place.
Joint finances
Mortgage applications and joint accounts frequently need the certificate as part of the lender’s checks.
Settlement and citizenship
Indefinite leave to remain and naturalisation applications both ask for it where the application rests on a marriage.

THINGS PEOPLE get caught out by
Later annotations matter
Many countries record a divorce, an annulment or a death on the original marriage entry. Those annotations are part of the document and are translated with it – leaving them out changes what the certificate says.
Religious versus civil certificates
A religious ceremony certificate is not always the legally registered record. UK bodies generally want the civil registration. If you have both, send both and we will tell you which one is being asked for.
Name spellings must agree
The spelling on the translation is matched to your passport, so that the certificate, the passport and the application form all say the same thing.
Going abroad, not to a UK body
If the certificate is for a foreign authority the order is translate, certify, then apostille – the FCDO certificate goes on the translation we prepared, and your original stays with you.

Will this be accepted for a spouse visa?

Do you need the original certificate?
No. A clear scan or photograph of every page, including the back and any annotations, is enough. Your original never leaves you.

Do I need a sworn or notarised translation instead?
For UK purposes a certified translation is what is asked for. Some foreign authorities want the declaration sworn before a solicitor or witnessed by a notary. Tell us who is receiving it and we will say which you need before you pay for anything.
