WHAT THE HOME OFFICE actually asks for
Where documents provided are not in English or Welsh, you must provide a full dated and signed translation in English that can be verified. This must be dated and include the full name and signature of the translator or an authorised official of the translation company and their contact details.

Anyone can say they translate Somali. These are the three things that actually decide whether a Somali file is accepted.
A Somali name is three names, and none of them is a surname
Somali naming runs given name, father’s name, grandfather’s name. There is no family surname in the UK sense, which is why a form with “first name” and “last name” boxes mangles it, and why siblings can appear to have different surnames. We reproduce the full name in the order the document gives it and explain the structure in a note, so a caseworker does not read a normal family as a discrepancy.
Documents come from different administrations, and the format varies
Records are issued by a range of authorities and the layout, wording and reference conventions differ considerably between them. We translate what is in front of us, describe the issuing authority as the document itself states it, and do not tidy anything into a format it never had.
An incomplete date stays incomplete
Somali records not infrequently give a year without a day, or an approximate age instead of a date of birth. Filling that in would be inventing evidence. The translation reproduces exactly what the document says, and where the source is partial it says so – which is far more defensible in front of a caseworker than a date that appears nowhere in the original.

Will the Home Office accept a Somali translation from you?
Yes, and we guarantee acceptance. It is complete and word for word, issued dated on company letterhead with the translator named and signed and our contact details on it.
My documents give different versions of my name.
That is common and usually explicable. Each document is translated exactly as issued, the differences are flagged to you before delivery, and the naming structure is explained in a note rather than left for a caseworker to interpret.
My document only gives a year of birth.
Then the translation gives a year of birth. We never complete a partial date – a date that appears nowhere in the source is a problem you would then have to explain.
Can you read a poor-quality or handwritten document?
Usually. Where something genuinely cannot be read it is marked illegible rather than guessed at. A sharp photograph with every corner in frame makes a real difference.
Do you need my original documents?
No. A clear scan or photograph is enough for the whole job including certification, and given how hard some of these are to replace we would much rather you kept them.
How long does it take?
A standard document is normally back within 24 to 72 hours and expedited delivers as fast as 24 hours.
